The Camaro project was launched shortly after the 2005 Detroit Auto Show, calling for a reinterpretation of the 1969 Camaro featuring the same 2+2 layout. The project was open to proposals from every GM studio around the globe. Original design cues were combined with elements from fighter jets and other high-performance vehicles. With many proposals that look similar to the final product we know today; GM eventually picked a design from its “Studio X” tucked away in a secretive basement in Warren, Michigan. The Concept was designed by South Korean-born Sangyup Lee. While the Camaro was revealed at the 2006 Auto Show, at a quick glance it looks the exact same as the production version 5th generation Camaro. However, many differences would exist – the mirrors, the addition of a B pillar, and is said that the production version was an inch taller and 4” as narrow.
